Funding: Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV, formerly BMDV), AVF research programme, grant no. 45AVF5A011

Lead institution: CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security

My affiliation: CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security

Duration: 10/2024-12/2027

Role: PI and project coordinator

Autonomous vehicles base their decisions on sensor data, so manipulating that data can lead to accidents. CYPHER-AV analyses how manipulations affect current sensors and the pipelines that process their data, and develops countermeasures. The project has three research directions: defence against physical manipulation of sensors, detection and prevention of manipulation in sensor fusion, and trustworthy processing platforms for automotive use. Results are evaluated on a demonstrator platform and are meant to serve as a reference for future research and product development.

KAMÄLEON: Adaptive Mobility for Light Vehicles

Full title: Konstruktiv adaptive Mobilität bei Leichtfahrzeugen durch dynamische Fahrzeuganpassung mit KI-basierter multisensorischer Umfelderkennung

Funding: Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, now BMFTR), joint project no. 01187068

Lead institution: HFC Human-Factors-Consult GmbH

My affiliation: CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security

Duration: 04/2019-12/2023 (extended, originally until 04/2022)

Role: Co-PI

KAMÄLEON investigated electric light vehicles, using tricycles as the example, that adapt to their surroundings the way a chameleon does. For instance, the maximum speed changes with the road surface, the traffic density or connecting transport. Sensors scan the surroundings, and AI methods identify the road surface and nearby road users so that the vehicle can adjust. CISPA contributed the security concept and a secure control unit, including authentication of CAN messages, to protect the vehicle’s state and approval-relevant parameters against manipulation.

HFC Human-Factors-Consult GmbH (consortium lead)

Funding: National Research Foundation, Singapore

Lead institution: Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)

My affiliation: Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)

Duration: 01/2015-07/2018

Role: Co-PI

ASPIRE studied the security and resilience of public infrastructure, in particular water treatment, water distribution and electric power. The project combined real-world testbeds with formal attacker models and simulation of cyber-physical attacks on water distribution networks. It also organised community activities such as a competition on attack detection algorithms and gamified ICS security exercises.
